I can ride the Mindbender 18 times in a row and be sore the next day; that doesn't make me an athlete. I'm not saying these people aren't in good condition or very good at what they do. I'm saying that, like in auto racing, the best athlete isn't going to win; the best machine (or in this case horse) is. In the 100m dash, the guy who runs fastest is going to win. In Show jumping, the guy whose horse fucks up least is going to win. I have a great amount of respect for the training that goes into getting a horse to not buck you when you're essentially running it into a wall, but training someone else to do something does not an athlete make.

If you think that Equestrian Jumping is a sport "where the human isn’t really the athlete" you know nothing about this sport. There were many talented horses jumping in this Olympics, but only a couple had clean rounds. I have no doubt most of them would be able to jump that course clean. That's where "the human" comes in - you have to be able to ride at full speed without making a mistake in guiding your horse around the course, making split second decisions with your body. I want to mention that it takes many many, 20 to 40, years of every day riding and conditioning yourself, stress it - every day for at least one hour per horse, and some of those "humans that are not athletes" ride 3 to 5 horses a day. Try riding one horse, say at the trot, for 10 minutes and you'll feel muscles next day that you never thought you had, even internal organs, connective tissues; every stride the horse makes will be absorbed by your body, stressing every part of it. It's like for 20-40 years running a marathon every day; if you can produce a personal best day in and day out, then you can compare yourself to an Olympic Jumper Rider. It's not as easy as it looks. What makes it hard is to make it look easy. It's a physically demanding sport for both the rider and the horse.

Oh, and if in your comment you were referencing my comments about Dugrenier above, I maintain that any wrestler who lets herself be pushed out of the ring twice and lose because of it when she is clearly a better wrestler (as opposed to say, a plowhorse) deserves to be called out for her lacklustre effort.

Well, I'm pretty sure that most Canadians feel a medal is a medal is a medal, so you're probably dealing with the US which, because of the vast amount of athletes and medals they have, tend to focus solely on golds. There's a turn of phrase that second-place if the first loser, and that's actually a pretty good point of view to build and Olympic team off of. If you have someone expected to win gold, it doesn't make sense to commend them on their bronze. No, you shouldn't rail on an athlete who sets a personal best and finishes fourth, but you shouldn't coddle the US basketball team when it finishes second either, and finding that balance is the key.

The Beijing Olympics has been a thriller to watch. The athletes are amazing . They train hard, win a few medals, and I'm sure try their very best. I'm very disappointed that some of the people interviewing these athletes don't seem to have the same point of view. How dare they grill an athlete because there was a siver or bronze medal won instead of gold. We are so proud of these young athletes trying their utmost best and being interviewed as if they really haven't tried. Have some of these people even tried to do some of these sports??. Please at the next Olympics show the athletes some respect!!
